The seven signals
If three or more of these apply, a rebuild is usually cheaper than continued patching.
- It takes more than a few seconds to load on mobile data.
- It is hard to use on a phone - pinching, horizontal scrolling, tiny tap targets.
- You cannot update content without calling a developer.
- Search Console shows indexing or Core Web Vitals errors you cannot resolve.
- The design no longer matches your current brand, services or pricing.
- Visitors arrive but never contact you, and analytics shows them leaving on the same page.
- The platform or plugins are unmaintained, so security patching has stalled.
Refresh, rescue or rebuild
A refresh updates visual design and copy on a healthy codebase. A rescue keeps the site but fixes performance, security, indexing and structure. A rebuild replaces the foundation when the platform itself is the limitation - and is the right call when the site cannot support the payments, integrations or content structure your business now needs.
Protect your search rankings
Whatever route you take, map every existing URL to its replacement and set 301 redirects before launch. Keep the pages that already earn traffic, and check Search Console for crawl errors during the first weeks after go-live. Most post-redesign traffic collapses trace back to a missing redirect map.
Not sure which one you need? We will audit your current site and tell you.
