Ask who owns the code and the accounts
You should own your domain, hosting, repository and analytics accounts. If an agency registers everything under its own name, moving away later becomes expensive. Get ownership in writing at proposal stage.
Check performance, not just looks
Open two or three of the agency's live sites on mobile data. Run them through a page-speed tool. Slow, image-heavy sites in a portfolio tell you exactly what you will receive, regardless of how good the mockups look.
Ask how search visibility is handled
A capable team will talk about page-level titles and descriptions, semantic headings, structured data, sitemaps, canonical URLs and Core Web Vitals without being prompted. If SEO is described only as an upsell after launch, expect to rebuild.
Confirm payment and local integrations
For Nigerian businesses, naira payments matter: Paystack, Flutterwave, bank transfer and USSD flows should be familiar territory, along with the reconciliation and receipting around them.
Look for process, not promises
Discovery, wireframes, design review, staged builds, a testing round and handover training. A defined process with written sign-offs protects both sides and keeps timelines honest.
- Who is my point of contact, and how often do we review progress?
- What happens if scope changes mid-project?
- What is included in support after launch, and what costs extra?
- Can my team update content without a developer?
- How is the site secured and backed up?
Talk to our Lagos team about your project - we will tell you honestly what it needs.
